Winners announced for Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition Writing Competition
As part of CCCC’s efforts to raise public awareness of cranes we initiated the first Yampa Valley Crane Festival Writing Competition in 2018. We invited high school seniors in Routt and Moffat counties to submit an original piece of writing inspired by our Greater Sandhill Cranes. Submissions could consist of a group of three poems; or it could be a short story or one-act play; or it could be a non-fiction personal or academic essay. The work had to be original and it had to accurately reflect the physical characteristics, behavior and habitat of the species. We received nine entries, all of which were outstanding. CCCC wishes to thank all of the students who participated in the contest:
- Kailee Davis
- Hannah Heil
- Sarah Heineke
- Jordyn Hetrick
- Ben Kelley
- Amanda Perlman
- Lana Pivarnik
- Max Skov
- Charlee Veilleux
Three prizes have been awarded this year.
First prize, a $1,500 scholarship, goes to Hannah Heil of Steamboat Springs High School.
Second prize and third prize awards each consist of a certificate and a beautiful book about cranes. Second prize goes to Charlee Veilleux of Soroco High School. Third prize is awarded to Kailee Davis of Steamboat Springs High School.
The winners will be honored both at the award assembly held at their individual schools and at the seventh annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival.
