First Crane Sighting Contest – 2017
Spring migration has started. Greater Sandhill Cranes are leaving their wintering homes in New Mexico and Arizona and heading north. Many will stop to rest for a short time in the San Luis Valley at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. Some may make a brief stop in the Eckert/Delta area south of Grand Junction.
We can expect the first arrivals here in the Yampa Valley sometime during the first or second week of March. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera or phone ready to document the first arrivals in the Yampa Valley.
Every year we hold the first crane sighting of the season contest. This year prizes will be awarded to the first sighting in West Routt, South Routt, North Routt, Steamboat Springs, and Craig, as well as a grand prize for the first sighting anywhere in the valley. Click here for contest rules.
